(The Kent State Massacre (also known as the Kent State shootings or May 4 massacrewere the killing of four and wounding of nine unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard on the Kent State University campus. The shootings took place on May 4, 1970, during a rally opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into Cambodia by United States military forces as well as protesting the National Guard presence on campus and the draft. Twenty-eight National Guard soldiers fired about 67 rounds over 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis. Students Allison Krause, 19, Jeffrey Miller, 20, and Sandra Lee Scheuer, 20, died on the scene, while William Schroeder, 19, was pronounced dead at Robinson Memorial Hospital in nearby Ravenna shortly afterward.)

As a Kent State alumnus your column hits home. While I attended more than a decade after the shootings, the images from that day are seared into my memory. It's especially so because the incident occurred next to Taylor Hall, the home of the schools of journalism and architecture.
For additional reading about that event, I highly recommend, When Truth Mattered by Robert Giles, who was a young editor at the Akron Beacon Journal, which earned a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the events that day and the fallout related to former Ohio Gov. James Rhoades' decision to sent the National Guard to the campus.
